07/04/09 by Peg Girard: "FUNDRAISER TO BE HELD FOR MCT (the history)"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE When Adrian Cahill first had the brainstorm to use comedy for fundraising he thought it would be a one-time effort. Seven years later, the laughs and dollars are still rolling in. The latest incarnation is “A Bit Sketchy – The Naughty Bits”, which is running at the Melbourne Civic Theatre from July 10-19, but other variations on this theme include the original, “A Bit Sketchy”, “A Bit Too Sketchy,” “Son of a Bit Sketchy” and last year’s one-show only extravaganza held at the Henegar Center, “A Bit Flaming Sketchy”, which raised $7000 for the fire victims of Palm Bay. Quote from Adrian... "After the last show I was recognized in the supermarket. I still limp a little and can't see properly out of one eye...but that's okay, I just avoid that store now" The loose-knit comedy troupe behind the “Sketchy” shows is called the Self Preservation Society, and although the faces change from show to show, the spirit of foolishness for a good cause does not. This year’s effort, to benefit the Melbourne Civic Theatre, boasts some of the most experience and talented actors in the area, including: Cahill, well known for his dry British wit; Bill Ronat (for his wry British bit(don't tell the wife)); Dan Wilkerson (for his self-lengthening facial hair); Mark Blackledge (for various small ruminants in a box); Christine and Michael Lafortune (actually the same person); Brenda Sheets (I bet she does!); Jeff Schweers (for various odd-shaped fruit hidden on his person); Steve Costner (spinster of the parish), Alan Selby (and various connections with the mob...but not that mob); Alfie Silva (actually owns a shadow of his former self); and Sue Teplica (sold her soul...only to get it back as a re-gift) Quote from Peg Girard (Managing Director MCT): “What a great time you will have, when you come to see all these funny people in on space. “ “The Naughty Bits” certainly describes the show, with uninhibited British humor on display (along with a few of the actors), so audiences are cautioned to be aware of that. But if you ever watch BBC America or even Saturday Night Live on television, you won’t find anything in this show that will cause you embarrassment. And if it does, so what? It’s all for a good cause.
